Himanta Biswa Sarma (HBS) is an Indian Politician, who is currently served as Finance Minister in Assam. He has also served in the Assam government as minister in Planning & development, Finance, Health & education etc from 2002 to 2014. He was a member of congress Party for 13 long years and resigned from Congress Party in 2015 to join BJP for ideological reasons. In courtesy to his previous achievements in politics, the BJP leadership appointed him the convener of the newly constituted North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

Himanta Biswa Sarma was born on 1 February 1969 (Current Age 49) in Gandhi Basti, Ulubari, Guwahati (Assam). His father was Late Kailash Nath Sarma and mother Mrinalini Devi.
When he was in 5th grade (in 1979), Assam Agitation was just started (It is best known for leading the six-year Assam Movement against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh). He had his friends joined AASU (All Assam Students Union). By 1980-81, He was the head of AASU's Guwahati unit, He was in AASU from 6 to 11th grade.
Later, In 1985, he joined Cotton College, Guwahati for further studies. He did his graduation in 1990 and post graduation in 1992 in political science from the Cotton College, Guwahati. He was also the General Secretary of Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) for 3 conjugative terms. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma did his LLB from Govt. Law College, Guwahati and obtained Phd degree from Gauhati University.

Political Career
Himanta’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma is the CMD of News Live group of television channels in Guwahati. They got married in 2001. The couple has two children named Nandil biswa sarma (son) and Sukanya Sarma (Daughter).
In 2017, Sarma shared pictures of family trip of Srinagar on social media (with wife and daughter) when they visited Vaishno Devi shrine and Kashmir Valley, the photos got viral and shared all over.
During his college days he was adjudged as the best debater and lead his college in various competitions. Because of his leadership and professional skills, he earned various high level appointments.
As the Minister of finance & planning and Development in the year 2002- 2006, he had brought considerable change in the field of Tax collection and revenue rationalisation in the state.
In his leadership more than 50000 teachers have been appointed for the first time through a transparent system called TET. He also initiated many medical colleges in the state.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also has a keen interest in sports and brought notable improvement in sports area.
